Have you thought about a Development Award with The Prince’s Trust?


Stage 1 - Am I eligible?
Please check the following criteria to see if you are eligible for an award.
Are you one or more of the following:
  • Aged between 14 – 25
  • Living in Scotland
  • Not a graduate (do not have a degree)
  • Unemployed or working under 16 hours
  • Not in full time education or training
  • In or leaving care


Stage 2 -  I am eligible, what can I use funding for?
If you are eligible the Prince’s Trust in Scotland could provide an award of between £50 -£500 to help you pay for things such as short term or part-time course fees, tools, interview clothes, or equipment and materials.

Please note that the award must be used as a direct way of getting you into education, training or employment

Please note Development awards are not given for living costsmedical treatments or care, higher education courses, costs towards overseas trips, loans or debts, general appeals.

Frequently Asked Questions About Development Awards


What Is a Development Award?
A Development Award is a cash award of £50-£500 aimed at helping young people access Further Education, Training and Employment.

Why Is It Needed?
To remove barriers that young people are facing which is stopping them from getting into a Job or Training or Further Education.

Who Can Get This Award?
The aim of The Prince’s Trust is to work with the most disadvantaged young people in Scotland. The Prince’s Trust core target group are young people 14-25 who are either Unemployed, Educational Underachiever(Less that 5 standard grades between level 1& 3) In Care or Leaving Care, Offenders and Ex Offenders and School Leavers.

Do The Young People Actually Get The Money?
Every Cheque is made out to a third party whether it is a College, A Driving School or Training Company, retail store etc. Every young person who is successful in their application will never be paid directly.

How Does The Princes Trust Know The Young Person Needs the Award?
Any successful applicants will have gone through our assessment process. This consists of trained Volunteers or Staff meeting the young person on a 1-1 and going through the assessment paperwork, which will show proof of costing finally making a recommendation the Awards Manager who will oversee the remainder of the process.

What Can Be Bought With This Award?
This can be flexible. The money can be spent on Course Fees, Tools to start an Apprenticeship, Formal Clothes for Interviews. Driving Lessons (job offer permitted), Computers to help with Education travel costs. In short anything that will engage young people in Education, Training or Employment.

How Does The Princes Trust Know The Money Has Helped?
From the date that the cheque is issued every successful applicant will
undertake a 3 Month Survey which is completed by a staff member or Volunteer. This Survey measures what impact the award has had and whether the young person is still in Education, Training or Employment. These results feed into our Nation Quality Control Scheme. We can provide anonymous case studies quarterly.

What Geographical Area Is The Money Spent?
The Princes Trust aim to work with the hardest to reach young people in Scotland. Anywhere is the answer to this question with special focus in the top 12 most deprived areas in Scotland.


Development Awards

Cash awards of £50 - £500 for young people to access education, training or work

How does it work?
Awards can be given for course fees, travel costs (UK only), childcare, equipment/materials/tools, work related clothing, volunteering/work placement costs, online learning, driving lessons(If job offer exists), Desktop for learning.

The following are not eligible:
Formal or informal groups or organisations
Gap year or overseas projects
Medical treatment
Course fees that are far above the £500 funding limit
Costs associated with NVQ Level 4, HNC, HND, degree or post-grad courses or courses of an equivalent level.
Debt/Loan payments

How does it help?
Participants can:
Receive a cash award to help undertake education or training or enhance their ability to gain employment
A Prince’s Trust volunteer will also support the young person in setting goals, making decisions and finding other programmes or support.
Who is eligible?
UK residents aged 14 – 25 who:
Are part of  at least one of The Trust’s four target groups – unemployed, educational underachiever, offender/ex offender, in care/left care within the last 12 months
Have education, training or work-related goals
School Leavers

Awards can take up to 6 weeks to process so applications should be made and planned in advance.
